While doing the daily scan of blogs, I ran across a reference to a Diogenes' post over at Catholic World News. Besides enjoying the idea that the Periodica de Re Canonica has a swimsuit issue, I have been following with interest the controversies over refusing communion to some public, scandalous sinners. So I slogged through the Archbishop's article (no pictures, alas) and learned that admiratio (Latin) doesn't mean admiration (positive), but wonderment (neutral). And I had to look up lapidary. A bit dense and serious for this early, but educational in it's own way.
Watching this controversy unfold has been somewhat like watching a goring in slow motion. Somebody's going to be very hurt when it's all over, but you can't take your eyes off the unfolding tragedy. For those keeping score, I see the Church as the bull (even though there is some considerable internal ecclesiastical debate--the safest bet is to listen to the head cheese), and those presenting themselves as Catholic and at communion, while publicly defying the Church's teachings, as the gored. ymmv.
